Statement from U.S. Rep. Newman (IL-03) on President Biden’s Address to a Joint Session of Congress

April 28, 2021

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Marie Newman (IL-03) released the following statement in response to President Biden’s Address to a Joint Session of Congress.

"I applaud President Biden tonight for laying out a bold vision that puts our working families, our small businesses and our communities first. These past 100 days have shown that our government can work and deliver for the American people.

“Months ago, Americans called on Washington, D.C. to deliver real COVID-19 relief that would bring back our local economies and put shots in the arms of our families. Through the passage of the American Rescue Plan last month, we expanded vaccines in our cities, put money in people's pockets, and supported our millions of small businesses and workers.

"It's time we seize this opportunity to build on the progress of the first 100 days and make a once-in-a-generation investment to create good-paying union jobs, build back our nation's infrastructure and embrace energy-efficient transportation. That is why I'm committed to passing the American Jobs Plan in the coming months so we can make our transportation systems more affordable, accessible and reliable than ever before.

"Beyond helping families meet the needs of today, we must invest in the innovation and growth of tomorrow. President Biden's American Families Plan does just that. Through this plan, we're making a historic investment in the foundations of middle-class prosperity: education, health care, and childcare.

"If there's one thing to take away from tonight's speech, it's this: the past 100 days have been nothing short of historic and our work is just getting started."
