U.S. Rep. Newman (IL-03) Appointed to House Committee on Small Business

January 5, 2021

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Marie Newman (IL-03) was appointed by her colleagues to serve on the House Committee on Small Business for the 117th Congress.

“As a former small business owner myself, I know that our local entrepreneurs and small businesses are the backbone of our economy. From mom-and-pop retailers to family-owned stores, more than 80% of all businesses in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District are small businesses. They are our neighbors, friends and family. That’s why I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve each and every one of them on the House Committee on Small Business,” said Congresswoman Newman. “Over the past year, I’ve met with hundreds of neighborhood businesses and seen first-hand how they’ve been hurting from the economic downturn caused by the COVD-19 pandemic. Since day one, I’ve been clear that the federal government needs to do more to protect and provide relief not only to our small businesses but their employees as well. It is time that we pass a real relief package with $2,000 stimulus checks and supports for our small businesses. With this appointment, I am doubling down on every effort to do just that because I know that when the country invests in our small businesses, we lift up local labor, create good-paying jobs and build back a stronger, more equitable economy.”

In addition to serving on the House Committee on Small Business, Congresswoman Newman currently serves on the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, Congressional Labor Caucus, House Democratic Manufacturing Working Group and Democratic Women’s Caucus. Additionally, she serves as the Vice Chair of Communications for the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), helping shape national messaging and campaigns on progressive policies surrounding universal health care, tackling the climate crisis and ensuring families receive the real relief they need to survive the COVID-19 pandemic.
