Funding would provide historic investments in water infrastructure to help local governments reduce the burden of flooding across the Southwest suburbs
CHICAGO, IL – As part of this year’s community project funding from the House Committee on Appropriations, U.S. Representative Marie Newman (D-IL-03) announced today that she has secured more than $7.5 million in federal funding that will improve local infrastructure to lessen the impact of heavy rainfall across Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. Upon passage in Congress, the funding would go towards the Cook County Department of Asset Management and the City of Palos Hills to support transformational improvements in water infrastructure.
“Flooding across the Southwest suburbs creates extensive logistical and financial burdens for our transportation system, homeowners and businesses,” said Congresswoman Newman. “Ensuring we do everything we can to alleviate the harm caused by heavy rainfall has been one of my top priorities as I’ve met with stakeholders across the district. I look forward to seeing how this historic investment strengthens our infrastructure and creates local jobs in the immediate term, in addition to its long-term impact as we grapple with more frequent extreme weather due to climate change. I am immensely grateful to all of my local partners who worked with my team to make these investments a reality.”
The following community project funding requests were recently approved by their respective subcommittees. In addition to these requests, Congresswoman Newman has submitted 13 other community projects for funding, which will be under consideration by subcommittee later this week. All submissions must designate federal funding for specific projects that demonstrate a positive benefit to the community and are a good use of taxpayer funds. Cook County Bureau of Asset Management – $4 Million
This project provides technical planning, design and construction assistance to local municipalities to improve water infrastructure. This funding will enable significant investments to address flooding and water quality concerns across Cook Country, including in La Grange, Western Springs, Countryside and Oak Lawn in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District.
“Flooding is a monumental challenge across Cook County, particularly in the Southwest suburbs,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “I commend Rep. Newman for taking the initiative to secure this funding for the infrastructure improvements we need to protect our homes and communities. By strengthening our water infrastructure, we will make significant progress in mitigating challenges posed by flooding across the region.”
